72Spending time out in the early morning or late afternoon sun is healthy for your body and mind. But too much sun can damage the skin. Do not forget to wear a sunscreen and protective clothing between 10am and 4pm. when the sun’s rays are strongest.
However if the above advice comes too late and you are already suffering from sunburn the following solutions can ease the pain of sunburn and speed healing.
Cooling the skin
To help cool your sunburned skin mix a drop of lavender oil with a tablespoon of aloe vera gel. Spread gently over burned skin.
Cooling Spray
For a body spray to help cool sunburned skin and promote healing you can mix:
60 ml of brewed green tea
60 ml of aloe vera juice
¼ teaspoon of lavender essential oil.
Put all the ingredients in a spray bottle, mix well and spray liberally over your skin. For extra freshness you can keep the spray mixture in the fridge.
Face Masks
Honey Mask
This mask is made of honey to help moisturize your skin and aloe vera to help cool and heal burned skin.
You will need:
2 teaspoons raw honey
2 teaspoons aloe vera gel
2 drops of lavender essential oil.
Mix the ingredients. Dampen your face with cool water, apply the mask to your skin and leave for about 20 minutes. Rinse with tepid water.
Yogurt mask
To help calm sunburned or wind burned skin try this yogurt mask. You will need 1 tablespoon of whole milk yogurt and 1 drop of lavender essential oil. Mix the ingredients into a paste and apply over skin. Leave to act for around 15 minutes and rinse with tepid water.
Cooling and Healing baths
Cooling down bath
The quickest way to cool sunburned skin is by soaking yourself in a bath of tepid water. Add 2 cups of baking soda to draw out the heat and 10 drops of lavender essential oil to calm inflammation. Add both ingredients to your bath water, stir to dissolve and mix well. Soak for about 20 minutes. Pat yourself dry gently and apply a soothing body lotion to seal in moisture.
Healing bath
To prepare a healing bath to help neutralize cell damage and provide additional skin soothing you can try mixing:
10 gr. dried green tea
10 gr. dried chamomile
10 gr. dried calendula
2.5 litres of water
To prepare, bring the water and herbs to a boil in a pot. Remove from the heat and steep until cool. Strain and add the mixture to a tepid bath. Soak yourself in the bath for about 20 minutes. Use everyday until your skin heals.
Eyelid Soother
Close swollen, sunburned eyelids and cover with cucumber slices or cool tea bags for 15 minutes.
Healer Drink
Drink at last ½ litre of green tea daily to provide extra antioxidants to help your sunburned skin to heal.
Remember:
Sunburn results when skin is burned by
ultraviolet (UV) radiation, most often after excessive sun exposure. It
is common, with nearly 32 percent of adults and between 72 and 83
percent of children and adolescents reporting at least one sunburn
during the course of a year. Prevention is the best medicine.
