12 Reasons to do aerobic exercise.
88When I used to hear the words “aerobic exercise” I used to imagine a group of women jumping together and performing to music. I once tried to join a class much to my despair and the trainer’s. I must say that I am very good at dancing but for some reason I just couldn’t follow an aerobic class. I think because deep down it was so pointless and boring that my body refused to follow.
Instead of pursuing the silly aerobic classes I went into calmer classes such as Yoga, stretching and Pilates. Now, I was good at that! However, I was still needing to achieve cardiovascular fitness. This is when I learned that aerobic exercise does not necessarily mean an aerobic class. Aerobic exercise is any kind of exercise that increases your pulse rate making you slightly breathless. Thus, there are many forms of aerobics exercise, the most common being jogging, swimming, cycling and running.

12 Reasons to do aerobic exercise.
Why aerobic exercise?
- Because it increases cardiovascular fitness which means that your heart muscle becomes stronger and pumps the blood around your body more efficiently.
- Regular exercise improves circulation, which in turn benefits your skin. That is why when you exercise you turn red. When your heart rate increases it also increases the volume of blood and the amount of oxygen in your body multiplies, feeding the small capillaries in the skin.
- Exercise helps to clean the body from inside out by increasing the elimination of toxins through sweat. Sweating also helps to lubricate the skin.
- Aerobic exercise protects against certain diseases –including coronary heart disease.
- Aerobic exercise increases the mineral content of your bones, thus preventing osteoporosis.
- It burns fat while building muscle.
- It gives more flexibility to the joints, preventing stiffness.
- Aerobic exercise increases your BMR (basal metabolic rate) which means that your body burns more calories even when it is at rest.
- I have heard that Aerobic exercise also suppresses appetite, but unfortunately this is not my case. After a session of aerobic exercise I am hungrier than ever, but I usually drink water and eat fruit to avoid regaining any loss calories.
- Aerobic exercise reduces blood pressure and cholesterol
- Aerobic exercise relaxes you and makes you sleep better. We all know this, after a good session of “bed exercise” you sleep like an angel.
- Aerobic exercise is a natural antidepressant.
Where do I start?
Now that you are convinced to start doing some aerobic exercise, but do not know where to start my advice would be to choose an activity and start gradually. Do not do too much at the start because it is likely that you will go off it and never do it again. Try to gradually incorporate aerobic exercise into your lifestyle.
walk the dog!
Cycle
Some tips to incorporate aerobic exercise into your lifestyle.
Try an aerobic class at your local gym to see if it suits you. It didn’t work for me, but many people find the discipline of going to a weekly class helps them to stick to it. There is also the advantage of peer support.
Increase
your overall daily activity; take the dog for walk at a fast pace with a long
stride and proper deep breathing and you will be burning around 80 calories for
every 20 minutes. Mowing the lawn and
gardening also counts as aerobic exercise as you would be burning around
120 calories for each 20 minutes.
Ride a
bicycle instead of driving everywhere.
Cycling is very fashionable at the moment, with petrol prices rising and
environmental issues being top in government’s agendas, more and more people
are turning to cycling as a means of transport.
Riding a bicycle is an excellent aerobic exercise. Little and often is best, 20 minutes cycling
will burn approximately 160 calories.
Dancing non
stop is good too and easy to incorporate into your weekend agenda.
Swimming is
a good choice for summer. 20 to 30
minutes a week is ideal, you would burn around 140 calories per session.
Whatever activity you choose, remember to end it with a few minutes stretching. A revitalizing stretch at the end of your exercise session will leave you feeling full of energy and ready for having more fun!

Of course, you need to combine aerobic with anaerobic exercise (which is where some body builder's sometimes go wrong, I think). It is all about complementing suppleness with the ability to perform sustained exercise. Useful Hub.
We should all take about our physical condition. We have only one body and surely we won't get another one that looks like Apollo/Aphrodite or other kind of perfect being. It is up to us - what we eat, drink, what we do. I'm sure that many of us could extend life by just using our body more properly.
Thank you for providing another arguments for convincing my girlfriend to do some exercise. She will certainly agree and do some jogging everyday as I do. Great hub.
Whatever activity you do, don't forget to end it with a 15 minutes stretching. This is very important.
you are as old as your body...great hub...we need to take care of what we have and be youthfull for life!
nice hub, i used to go to the gym and tried yoga but i just don't have the discipline to continue after a while, so instead, i do brisk walking about 15 min a day and some stretching, i think, it works for me for now, but thanks for the great info.
Exercise can defeat diseases, it is good for the organs, and it keeps the brain and mind working well. You did well here with your explainations.

I also think that it helps you mentally regarding focus and efficiency. Great hub!

Very useful Hub thanks.
I think about starting exercise every day but cant I am lazy.
I like exercise because it helps counter stinking thinking and helps me keep a positive mental attitude.
I loved aerobics classes and didn't find them boring at all - thanks to the funky, upbeat music. But I must say aerobics take a while to get the hang of it. You will feel like an complete klutz in the first few classes. But once you get the hang of it, it becomes easier and more fun.
aerobic is good
Your suggestions of walking, biking, dancing and swimming are great. It seems that when exercise is natural it is so much more enjoyable and easier to keep it up!

The exercise is very necessary for good health. Aerobics has got huge advantages in this regard. The every muscle and bone is stretched and the whole body get necessary workout. If the individual practices aerobics, then, in a very sort span of time his body starts glowing.
WOW....Great Hub. I agree on the importance of Aerobic Excercise. It is not enough to just lift weights. Getting the blood flowing and becoming winded when working out is extremly important to overall health.
This article was very good. I can use it on my blog. Thanks for the great article.

Anath, this is a great hub on aerobics. So are you telling me that if I ride a bike in stilettos I'll look like the model above..LOL! Just kidding, but that is an incentive to pull out the old bike and ride. Thanks for sharing! :)
What is the recommended amount of aerobic exercise per week? 3 times? 2 times?
Swimming is excellent! Love the walk the dog photo! Very well done!

nice hub again.
In addition to being good for the heart, there is numerous studies that show that aerobic exercise is good for the brain too. Exercise helps maintain good arteries, and certainly there are a lot of arteries in the brain.
Mice that does exercise had been shown to grow new brain cells in the hippocampus.
yeah, it can be really hard to chose the right gym. Good points!
I can vouch for the benefits as a couch potato, turned grudging runner to lose weight, turned marathon runner, and finally for many years now long distance mountain runner.
As regards losing appetite it happens too...BUT- It happens for me beyond 60 miles a week on the flat - ie 6-8 hours at HR 160+ , longer on mountains say 9-10 hours a week out on the mountains - having said that, that kind of level of aerobic exercise climbing hills at HR 150+ loses weight fast anyway...
Coming back from injury I can shed 2 stone in 8 weeks - 15% body weight by keeping to that regime.. the weight loss slowing down as i appraoch lean weight
So few people exercise enough to see appetite loss
appetite loss?
yeah, i guess i'm not exercising enough....can anyone do a hub on how many calories you burn while typing?
YAY! imma get back on my workout tomorrow! ty for the motivation!
Well done Hub! I appreciate your delineation between aerobic and anaerobic exercises. Cardiovascular exercise is incredibly important and frequently neglected by gym-goers, especially the body-building crowd. I lift weights frequently at the gym, but realize the importance of cardio in addition to a regular weight lifting regime. A lot of other men I know could greatly improve their strength and size gains and overall health if they did the same. Thank you again for the informative article!
Hi Anath!

Great article - thanks. Have you done any research on interval training? It's my favorite trend right now, because you get aerobic exercise in with weight training, so you lose fat and get some lean muscle.
Swimming is a great aerobic exercise activity. Some say swimming is even better than running. You would be surprised at how affordable owning a pool can be. Check out Nationwidepools.com.
Great hub - cardio is very critical. I agree with Jen - interval training is great - add some water and you can have circuit training with target toning - right in the water.
Great hub - We need more information like this today more than any other time. We have some many people over weight and dropping dead as a result.

Great hub, very well written, full of info.
My old bodybuilding instructor used to say to try to make those funny screams of aerobic classes while doing chest press under 100kg on the barbell. He was quite sarcastic. There is always a kind of sarcasm between bodybuilders and aerobic practitioner, but reality is that doing both it's the best thing for overall health. Your hub explains very well the benefits of aerobics. Rated up.
